What Is Hypnosis?

Hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness.  It is a natural state of mind that is entered into spontaneously every day.  Contrary to popular understanding, Hypnosis is not going to sleep. It is actually an increased level of awareness and one result of this is that distant or previously unconscious memories may be recalled in vivid detail. Hypnosis is used in chronic and acute pain control.  It can be effective in improving confidence, concentration, recall, motivation, focus, health and stress management.  It can help overcome addictions, habits, eating disorders, insomnia, fears, and negative thought, emotional and behavior patterns.

What Is A Session Like?

It is not what you’ve seen in the movies, on T.V. or in Bugs Bunny cartoons.  Hypnosis is often induced through various methods of relaxation.  As a result of this process, the critical part of the conscious mind is bypassed, giving the hypnotist and client direct access to the deeper mind, the subconscious. Under hypnosis, the hypnotist does not have control of the client, the subject is not asleep.  On the contrary, in the hypnotic state you are not unconscious; you are aware of everything around you.  It is a heightened level of awareness, not sleep. Hypnosis is probably more accurately described as a process, not a state.  When under hypnosis, you are not at the same level of consciousness the entire time.  You move from deeper states to less deep states and back again throughout the process.
